Tips for finding housing in Bergen

01. Know what you are looking for. Find out where you want to live and what you are able to pay.

02. Do not pay to see advertisements. We recommend hybel.no, zett.no and finn.no. A good tip is to make your own advertisement, where you give potential landlords information about yourself and your preferences concerning housing. An advertisement like this can be posted free of charge at hybel.no.

03. Never rent an apartment you haven't seen! You can bring a friend to the viewing, or have a friend/BergenStudenten go to the viewing on your behalf. Be critical and ask questions about the apartment at the viewing.

04. Examine what is included in your rent, like electricity, broadband, washing machine etc.

05. Have a written contract. Read the contract and make sure you understand it before signing. Check especially the regulations about the notice. BergenStudenten can help you with this.

06. The deposit should always be placed on a deposit account for the landlord's expense. Never pay in cash.

07. The accommodation should contain everything you have agreed on in the contract. Take photos and report discrepancies to the landlord as soon as possible.

08. Make sure your belongings are covered by insurance.

09. Take pictures of the housing when you move in, so you have proof in case of any unreasonable claims when moving out.

10. The rent can not be changed until it's been a year, and can only be adjusted in accordance with the official rent index regulations.
